There was a time when Châteauneuf-du-Pape was rustic and powerful, yet nuanced and complex after long aging. However, it was then influenced by reviewers, and winemakers began bombarding us with the same excessive fruit, alcohol, and oak found in Cult Napa Cabs. Thankfully, a shift is underway, taking us back to a more elegant traditional style. Domaine de Ferrand is made with a light touch: the 2022 is a concrete-vinified blend of 85% Grenache, plus Mourvèdre, Bourboulenc, Syrah, and Cinsault, from three old-vine lieux-dits. Medium full-bodied, elegant, and soft with notes of fruit compote, wild herbs, minerals, and bright acids over plenty of earthy terroir. Decant now if you can't wait another few years.
