Elevated from a Côtes du Rhône Villages to its own AOC in 1990, Vacqueyras is appreciated for yielding concentrated, age-worthy wines at moderate prices -- especially compared to its neighbors next door in Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Henri Bungener makes several cuvees with hand-harvested Grenache & Syrah grown on the slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail and follows a low-intervention model: no chemicals, no lab yeasts, and in this young-vine wine, no wood! Fruits Sauvages is aged 12 months in concrete tanks, so all you taste is wild fruit in its natural expression with lashings of dark berries, spice, tannin, and earth. So complex, so engaging, and so delicious.
