Most of the interesting winemaking seems to be happening on Bordeaux’s right bank. Rachel Hubert is the sixth generation of winemaker/owner at Château Peybonhomme-Les Tours, where a team of female viticulturists works on the certified biodynamic estate. In 1997, the Huberts added Château La Grolet in Saint Ciers de Cannesse, Côtes de Bourg. The property was certified organic/biodynamic in 2000, a rarity in Bordeaux, so the vines and soils have had plenty of time free of chemicals. 2022 Grolet is a blend of old vine 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Malbec fermented with native yeast and aged in concrete for one year before bottling unfined/unfiltered on a "fruit day." It's juicy, fleshy, and grippy with plenty of black berries and hints of tobacco, amaro herbs, and chocolate. At 14% ABV, we recommend this lovely wine with a nice roast.
