We're big fans of Peter Lauer, from whom we feature a dry Riesling, off-dry Riesling, and now a dry Sekt (pronounced z-eh-kt). Although Germany is not well known for sparkling wine, it makes and consumes significant amounts. Most German bubbly is unremarkable and comparable to Prosecco in terms of production, quality, and cost, but some is made in the traditional method with lees-aging, hand-riddling, disgorgement, and second fermentation in bottle. Lauer does the latter, known as Traditionelle Flaschengärung, with 100% organic Riesling from Ayl in the Saar region. This is a Brut-style, ebullient, sparkling wine from 2021, disgorged in 2025, showing crystal-clear Riesling notes of green apples, apple strudel, minerals, and high acidity. We believe it will age beautifully over the coming years.
