Named after the migratory indigenous people of Patagonia, Chono is representative of Chilean winemakers like Álvaro Espinoza, who travels throughout Chile looking for the best fruit and terroir. It's also a nod to Bordeaux, which is the ancestral home of Carmenere and is still used occasionally as a blending grape in Medoc. However, Carmenere thrives in Chile as the star player, and this single-vineyard Maipo Valley wine is 90% Carmenere supplemented with Merlot and Petit Verdot. The fruit is macerated for 45 days, fermented in steel, and aged in 300 and 500-liter French oak barrels (25% new) for 16 months. If you like Malbec or Cabernet (Carmenere's relative), you'll love this fuller-bodied, structured, velvety wine with fragrant notes of berries, plums, black pepper, cloves, mocha, and bay leaf. Pairs well with grilled meats, tamales, stews, and hearty veggie preparations.
