This crossing of Traminer and Österreichisch-Weiß ('Austrian White') came to the Germanic empire from central Europe around the 1650s and is now grown primarily in Franconia and Alsace. Possibly named after 'forest' (Silvus), Sylvaner is a green-skinned varietal with plenty of perfume for dry or dessert wines. This is a fruity Silvaner (11.5 % alcohol) by Stefan Meyer, a winemaker who crafts terroir-driven wines in the Pfalz village of Rhodt unter Reitburg (62 miles south of Frankfurt). He farms according to organic principles and imbues his fleshy, medium-bodied wine with pear, peach-pit, zippy green citrus, and a tad of medicinal herb for a drying complexity. Next time you're in the market for a party wine, grab Ein Liter of Silvaner.
