Before ignoring the Zinfandel shelf, please talk to us. We share your experience of overwhelming Zinfandels that are no more than sweet, oaky, alcohol bombs, but Sky is not one of those. Founded by Lore Olds in 1973, his vineyards are the highest (2,100 feet) on the east-facing cold slope of Mt. Veeder in Napa. He crafts one Zin and one Syrah from 16.5 acres when all the conditions are perfect—you won't find multiple cuvees at this off-the-grid natural winery. His Zin is 100% hand-heaviest fruit put through an old basket press, aged in neutral oak, and hand-bottled. The 2015 is light on its feet with nervy acidity, notes of pepper, wild berries, cherry, and volcanic minerality. Drink through 2030.
