Moscato is sometimes an afterthought for Piemontese winemakers, but the Perrone family has been making it in the village of Castiglione Tinella (about 10 miles from Asti) since the 1800s. Stefano Perrone, a retired champion motocross racer, inherited the winery from his father in the 1990s and elevated local sweet varietals Brachetto and Muscat to international acclaim. Sourgal is the product of hilltop fruit grown on a small single vineyard and is extraordinarily expressive, concentrated, and complex with balanced acid and sugar. It is not an exaggeration to claim that it's one of the finest Moscati resplendent with aromatic blossoms, nectarines, and oranges. Enjoy it as a dessert all on its own, but it also goes well with fruit tarts, custards, pies, and lemon squares.
