Located right next door to Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, Vacqueyras [vah-kay-rahz] is an area where some of the greatest values can be found. Elevated from a Côtes du Rhône Villages to an AOC in 1990, Vacqueyras is known as a "poor man's Châteauneuf-du-Pape" because it has a history of yielding concentrated, age-worthy wines at half the price. Nevertheless, we think it stands on its own -- we have several on the shelf at the moment. 2023 Santa Duc is a blend of Grenache & Syrah from lieux-dits Les Aubes and La Ponche, fermented in steel, aged in Stockinger oak and terracotta amphorae for 18 months, and bottled unfined/unfiltered. Fuller medium-bodied with lots of red berries, earthy spice, integrated tannins, and vibrant fruitiness before a balanced, food-friendly finish. Pair with stews, braised meat, and veggie casseroles.
