Beaumes-de-Venise (bom deh ven-eez) is not famous for Rhône rouge, but rather for a deliciously sweet vin doux naturel that gained AOC Classification back in 1943—more than 60 years before the village was granted Cru status. Unfortunately, one doesn't encounter much Muscat de Beaumes de Venise these days, but the Leydier family keeps this unsung region relevant by making some spectacular red wine on their 56-hectare property at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail. Their old-vine rouge is on par with fellow Cru villages Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but at a fraction of the price! Savor all the lovely Rhône flavors in this neutral oak-aged blend of 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre. Full-bodied and rustic yet soft, velvety, and refined with lots of dark fruit, cherries, and herbes de Provence. Enjoy with grilled foods, pizza, Latin fare, and winter soups.
