Languedoc is often mistaken as a vast homogenous region for budget wines. While it’s true to some extent, there are also many premier villages for excellent wines at reasonable prices: Corbieres, Pic Saint Loup, Faugères, Saint Chinian, Fitou, Cabardès, and Minervois. Located not far from the Mediterranean, Minervois is an old Roman outpost with a very long winemaking tradition. Proprietor Bernard Boudouresques and his family have refurbished the estate with fresh plantings and organic certification for their 50 acres of vineyards. This Origine cuvee is a medium-bodied blend of steel-vinified Grenache (80%) and Syrah that ages for two years in the bottle as it develops notes of wild berries, savory herbs, garrigue, and sauvage. It’s the perfect not-too-heavy winter red with any meal you cook. And it’s under $20!!
