Most Sherry companies have been in business a long time, but Bodegas Alonso is relatively new to the scene with an artisanal approach. Like Fino Sherry, Manzanilla is quite dry and made of Palomino grapes, but this wine is produced in Sanlucar de Barrameda right next to the Gulf of Cadiz instead of farther inland. Manzanilla is salty and nutty, and Velo Flor has lots of that plus an average of ten years under a thick layer of yeast that develops deep color with a powerful sea-brine nose, then baked apple, oyster shell, roasted Marcona almonds and no oxidation. The final wine is unfiltered with no added sulfites and bottled in a funky Clavelin bottle (620ml) with handmade labels. A real treat for Sherry lovers to enjoy chilled with paella, fried foods, hams, and sausages.
