Colheita (kol-yay-ta) is a cross between Tawny and Vintage ports. Like Vintage port, it is an unblended product from a single harvest; but like Tawny, it is aged in barrels and mature when bottled. The heir to the 17th-century estate-cum-hotel, high up the Douro river in the microclimate of Provenzende, partnered with legendary winemaker Dirk van der Niepoort, who fell in love with the 12 acres of vineyards. Aged for a minimum of ten years, this table-ready Colheita is red with a tawny brick rim, followed by dried fruit, compote, figs, and walnut cake. Pairs with dessert, blue and aged cheeses, pâté, nuts, chocolate, caramel, apple or pear tart.
