2024 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Paul Giamatti film Sideways, which introduced Pinot Noir to the masses. Most people were unaware that California produced exceptional Pinot Noir, but its acreage nearly tripled afterward. Some of it was plonk, some were okay, but some have defined the California style. Sean Capiaux started his winery in 1994 and has been making benchmark Pinot ever since. Chimera is made primarily with Russian River Valley fruit aged nearly one year in French oak (10% new) to yield a big wine with dense floral, plum, and cherry notes. Great with steak and BBQ.
