Kuroki Honten Distillery - "Nakanaka - Pretty" Barley Shochu
While there are similarities among Japanese Shōchū, Korean Soju, and Chinese Baijiu, they differ in base ingredients, ABV, flavor, and production. Shōchū is a bit like low-proof vodka at 25-35% ABV. It can be distilled from almost anything: nuts, grains, vegetables, or straight-up brown sugar combined with a variety of Koji (fungi), which really determines the flavor.
In production since 1885, Kuroki Hoten grows almost all its ingredients on 50 acres of chemical-free land in the southern Japanese Prefecture of Miyazaki. Nakanaka-Pretty is 100% 2-row Mugi (barley), featuring Black barley koji for its signature flavor, expressed through roasted grain, cocoa, and pepper notes. Serve chilled & neat, mixed with soda & ice, or “oyuwari” (cut with hot water) to unlock all the subtle flavors. 50 proof.
