The Mâconnais region (located in southern Burgundy, just north of Beaujolais) is a destination for daily Chardonnay. While Mâcon is known for its most famous village, Pouilly-Fuissé, dozens of others offer superb quality and flavor at modest prices. Olivier Giroux bought Clos des Rocs about 20 years ago and specializes in Pouilly-Loché across several terroirs on 37 acres. His Mâcon-Loché En Pres Forêt wine comes from a single old vineyard atop limestone & clay on four acres near a forest, processed almost entirely in stainless steel, with a small portion aged in old 500-liter oak barrels. There are cheaper Mâcons on the market -- look for any standard Mâcon-Villages, but you won't find the same level of craftsmanship, concentration, and fruit quality matching this supremely elegant Chard with notes of citrus, pear, minerals, and apple tarte.
