D'Armailhac has a long and fascinating history. The vineyards date back to the 14th century, when they were part of a feudal estate spanning 5,000 acres. In 1660, the d'Armailhacq family took over, and by 1855, Château Mouton-d'Armailhacq had gained classification as one of the eighteen Cinquièmes Crus (Fifth Growths). In 1933, the Rothschild family acquired the chateau and changed its name several times until 1989, when Baroness Philippine reverted to the original name, d'Armailhac. With a reviewer average of 93 points, this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 15% Cabernet Franc is a well-priced Pauillac without having to spend on Mouton, Lafite, or Duhart-Milon -- and it's ready to drink after fifteen years. Medium to full-bodied with fine tannins, silky black fruit, graphite, iron, and leather. A well-crafted, long-lived classic.
